Appreciation is something we all value. While many of us express gratitude for extraordinary acts, it’s easy to overlook the everyday efforts of those who quietly support us — especially when those gestures seem small or routine.
In the world of healthcare, burnout is a growing concern. Recent figures reveal that nearlyhalf of ambulance staff (49.3%) and more than a third of medical and dental professionals (35.3%) report feeling burned out due to their demanding roles. These are already challenging professions, and the added weight of feeling overlooked only compounds the struggle.
That’s why, during Professional Care Workers Week, (16th – 20th September 2024), volunteers and members of the Patient Care Group (PCG) at various UCKG HelpCentres across the UK came together to do something special. They planned heartfelt, meaningful gestures to remind healthcare staff that their constant care and tireless dedication to the community do not go unnoticed.
From Manchester to Catford, Finsbury Park to Stratford, and across to Edmonton, Nottingham, and more, PCG volunteers made it their mission to give back. With cards, thoughtfully prepared hampers, and warm words of thanks, they visited local hospitals and care homes to shine a light on the heroes behind the scenes.
Some of the places visited included St George’s Hospital, Middlesex Hospital, Chase Farm Mental Health Hospital, Capwell Grange and Manton Heights-Abi Unit Care Homes, Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Willow Care Home, among others. Everywhere they went, their simple acts of kindness were met with smiles, gratitude, and in some cases, heartfelt emotion. One member of staff shared, “It’s good to be remembered for our hard work.” A simple comment — but one that speaks volumes.
In the end, it wasn’t about the size of the gift, but the thought behind it. Sometimes, it’s the small gestures that make the biggest difference. And in a world that often moves too fast, taking a moment to say “thank you” can be more powerful than we realise.
