It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since COVID-19 changed our lives. At UCKG Outreach, we answered the call by increasing the capacity of our existing food projects in Catford, as well as opening new food projects across the UK. Along with our existing food project in Catford, that year we also opened food projects in the following locations:
• Plaistow
• Stamford Hill
• Croydon
• Edmonton
• Hackney
• FPK
• KLB
• Leeds
• Peckham
Through these efforts, we were able to help over 12,000 people nationwide in the first year. Our volunteers risked their health and that of their families to ensure that no-one in our community was left behind.
It was a difficult time — so many people suffered, lost their lives, and mourned their loved ones. During the height of the pandemic, we wanted to be there to give whatever help we could, offering not just food, but comfort and support in a time of uncertainty.
In Catford, we also stepped up to help with vaccination efforts. We opened our space to be used as a vaccination hub, which delivered over 350 vaccinations. Through this journey, we learned about food poverty, in-work poverty, and the importance of signposting people to the support they need.
Throughout it all, we formed strong relationships with local authorities, food providers, restaurants, businesses, and local individuals; all working together to ensure our community was supported.
The pandemic showed the power of community. Many food projects and individuals came together, demonstrating the true meaning of solidarity. With a non-means-tested service open to all, we continue to serve with humility and sacrifice — never asking for thanks, only happy to help.
Today, we now have 27 Soup Kitchens/Food Banks, nationwide, from London, as far as Belfast & Glasgow. This would not be possible, without the help of the many volunteers, other organisations, and local stores/restaurants/businesses and community. This is why we are hosting an amazing event across all our food projects “Cook Out to Reach Out”! Inviting all our supporters and local restaurants/businesses to pledge meals to help feed those struggling with food poverty in our community. Everyone is welcome! Together, as a community, we can make a real difference in these times of cost of living crisis.
Here’s to continuing our mission— because no-one should ever be left behind.
