On Saturday 16 August 2025, the Patient Care Group (PCG) held its third Community Health Point event of the year at Hammersmith Broadway Shopping Centre. The event offered members of the public free, on-the-spot health checks aimed at promoting early detection and greater awareness of common health conditions.
During the day, the volunteers from the team carried out, 81 blood glucose checks; 139 blood pressure readings; 142 oxygen saturation tests and 71 BMI recordings. In addition, some individuals who took advantage of this free service were urgently referred to their GP for further medical attention based on results obtained during the event. These quick but important tests can help identify potential health risks before they become serious.
This initiative is part of PCG’s ongoing commitment to supporting the community’s overall wellbeing—not just spiritually, but also physically. Recognising the current pressures on the NHS, events like this aim to make essential health services more accessible to those who may face barriers to traditional care.
These efforts are especially important in boroughs like Hammersmith and Fulham, where health inequalities and long-term conditions continue to affect many residents. In fact, recent data highlights that, in 2022, 234 people in the borough died early from heart and circulatory diseases. According to the 2021 Census, 5.7% of residents described their general health as “bad or very bad.”
One volunteer, Marie, shared:
“It’s such a simple thing to do, but it can save lives.”
Her words highlight the real value of identifying potential health issues early—often with just a few minutes and a friendly chat.
Members of the public also appreciated the service. One attendee, James, said:
“Getting a doctor’s appointment these days is really difficult, so having free checks like this is a real help. The staff and volunteers were so friendly and professional – it made the whole experience very pleasant.”
