At night, we are meant to find solace, peace, and rest; however, for many, this time can be the most challenging. This is why our volunteers, known as the Night Angels, dedicate their time during these hours to provide comfort to those facing difficulties after dark.
Located in various areas across the country, the Night Angels take to the streets of their communities to distribute bags filled with essential items for individuals experiencing homelessness. These bags contain necessities such as food, warm clothing, and hygiene products. December 2024 marked a 14% increase in homelessness. This equalled, 354,000 people, including 161,500 children, homeless in England. Armed with these supplies, and a willingness to help, our volunteers venture out with the intention of being a beacon of hope in the darkness.
In addition, our Night Angels volunteers participate in an initiative to leave messages of hope and encouragement at bridges and other locations. Recognising that many individuals suffer in silence and may feel that taking their own life is the only option, our teams visit these sites to convey a message of hope, demonstrating that there is a way out. Our volunteers have visited numerous locations, including Blackfriars Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Bury Bridge, Southgate Bridge, Crown Point Bridge, and many others.
Having visited these locations, the individuals involved have had remarkable experiences. During some visits to the bridges, they encountered other groups such as, Bridge Watch, who acknowledge the positive impact of the Night angel’s work. They shared that the observe people reading the noted and receiving positive feedback from them. One of our regular volunteers engaged in this initiative stated,
“We understand the importance of leaving messages of faith and motivation on bridges so that when someone in need discovers them, they realise that there is a solution to their problems.”
With each note left at a bridge or any other location, we instil the belief that our message reaches those we may not be able to physically connect with ourselves. The Night Angels aim to reach individuals who often feel forgotten or defeated. To assure them that there are people who care and are willing to help.
